ChatGPT Ads: What They Track and How to Turn Them Off

If you use the free version of ChatGPT, you have probably seen a small box marked “Sponsored” at the bottom of an answer. That is an ad. ChatGPT ads are no longer a quiet experiment. On 1 September 2026, OpenAI said the business had reached a $1 billion annual run rate in under 200 days.

So the ads are here to stay. The questions most people actually have are simpler than the business headlines: what do these ads know about me, do they change the answers I get, and can I switch them off? Here are the plain answers.

Why did ads suddenly appear in ChatGPT?

Money. Running ChatGPT is expensive, and most people use the free version. OpenAI began testing ads in the United States on 16 January 2026, for logged-in adult users on the Free tier and the cheaper ChatGPT Go plan.

The growth has been fast. According to Digiday, the $1 billion figure is an “annualized run rate” — that means current monthly income multiplied by twelve, roughly $83 million a month. It is not a full year of money already collected. OpenAI has told investors it expects about $2.5 billion in ad revenue during 2026.

On 31 August 2026, OpenAI opened self-service ad buying across 31 European markets. Before that it was mostly big agencies. Now any small business can buy a slot.

The short version: ChatGPT is following the same path as Google search and Facebook — free for you, paid for by advertisers.

Where do ChatGPT ads show up right now?

Ads appear in a labelled box below the answer, not inside it. They run on the Free and ChatGPT Go plans. Paid plans — Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu — stay ad-free, and so do accounts registered to under-18 users.

The rollout has been country by country. OpenAI’s own availability list currently names Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States, with more markets being added.

The ad itself looks like a small card: advertiser name, a short headline, a line of copy, sometimes a picture, and a link. Since mid-2026 OpenAI has also run product ads pulled straight from shop catalogues, so a question about running shoes can bring up actual shoes with prices.

Do ChatGPT ads change the answers you get?

OpenAI says no. Its official help page on ads in ChatGPT states that ads “do not influence ChatGPT’s answers”, that the ad system “runs on separate systems from our chat model”, and that advertisers “have no ability to shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT’s responses”. The answer is written first; the ad box is chosen afterwards.

That is the official position, and there is no public evidence contradicting it. But two honest cautions are worth keeping in mind.

  • The ad is picked from your question. Even if the words above it are neutral, the brand you see was chosen because of what you just asked. That still nudges you.
  • A chat feels like advice, not a search page. When a suggestion sits directly under something that sounds like a friend’s recommendation, the line between the two gets blurry — especially when you are tired, worried or in a hurry.

Ads are not the only thing that can shape what a chatbot tells you. We looked at a different route in this piece on how fake Reddit posts can change what ChatGPT says — that one is about the training and search data behind the answer, not the sponsored box under it.

What do ChatGPT ads actually track about you?

The ad system uses the topic of your current chat, your rough location and your device. If ad personalization is switched on, it also uses wider signals from your account — past chats, saved memories, and which ads you clicked before. It does not use tracking cookies that follow you around other websites.

Two important limits, stated by OpenAI:

  • Advertisers never see your conversations, your chat history, your saved memories or your personal details. They pick topics and audiences; they do not read your messages.
  • OpenAI says it does not sell user data.

There is also a legal split. In the United States, personalised ads are switched on by default and you opt out. In the European Union and the United Kingdom, the law works the other way: OpenAI must get your clear consent before it can personalise ads at all.

Where ads are never allowed to appear

This part matters more than most people realise. OpenAI keeps ads out of sensitive conversations, whatever the advertiser sells. That includes personal health, mental health and politics. Political advertising is not allowed in ChatGPT at all.

So a health insurance company may be approved as an advertiser, but its ad cannot appear while you are describing your symptoms or asking about a diagnosis. In April 2026, OpenAI loosened the rules slightly so that medical, legal and financial topics are no longer blocked by default — but genuinely personal and sensitive chats remain off limits.

The rule is about the conversation, not the company: if the moment is personal, no ad is shown.

How do you turn off ChatGPT ads?

You have three real options, and they are not the same. One reduces targeting, one removes ads at a cost, and one avoids them per chat. Nothing in the Free plan’s normal settings removes ads while keeping every feature.

1. Turn off personalised ads (ads stay, targeting shrinks)

Go to Settings → Data Controls → Personalized Ads and switch it off. You will still see ads. They will just be based on the chat in front of you rather than your history and memories. You can also delete your ad-related data from the same area.

2. Switch to ad-free mode (free, but you give something up)

Open Settings → Ads controls → change plan and pick the ad-free option. It costs nothing, but your daily message limit drops and some tools go away — OpenAI specifically names image generation and deep research. It is a genuine trade, not a loophole.

3. Use Temporary Chat (no ads, nothing saved)

Click the chat mode selector at the top of ChatGPT and choose Temporary Chat. These sessions never show ads and are not saved to your history. This is the easiest choice for a one-off question you would rather keep private.

And of course, paying for Plus or Pro removes ads completely. If you are weighing that up, our earlier look at what an OpenAI IPO could mean for everyday users is worth a read — the pressure to earn money from free users is unlikely to ease.

What this means for you

Nothing here should make you stop using ChatGPT. But three habits are sensible now that ads are part of it.

  • Check the label. Anything in a box marked “Sponsored” is a paid placement, not a recommendation from ChatGPT.
  • Use Temporary Chat for personal questions. Health worries, money problems, job stress — those chats do not need to feed anything.
  • Look at your settings once. Two minutes in Data Controls tells you exactly what is switched on for your account.

The bigger shift is quieter. For twenty years, the ad and the answer sat on the same page but looked different. In a chat window, they sit one under the other in the same conversation. Knowing which is which is now a small everyday skill.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use ChatGPT without ads for free?

Yes. Switch to ad-free mode in Settings → Ads controls, or use Temporary Chat. Ad-free mode costs nothing but lowers your daily message limit and removes some tools, including image generation and deep research.

Do ChatGPT ads read my private conversations?

Advertisers do not. OpenAI says advertisers never get access to your conversations, chat history, memories or personal details. OpenAI’s own ad system does use your current chat topic, and your history if personalization is on.

Will I see ads if I pay for ChatGPT?

No. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans are ad-free. Ads currently appear only on the Free tier and the lower-cost ChatGPT Go plan, and never on accounts registered to under-18 users.

Do ads appear when I ask ChatGPT about my health?

No. OpenAI blocks ads in sensitive conversations, including personal health, mental health and politics. The rule follows the topic of the chat, so an approved health advertiser still cannot appear while you discuss symptoms.

Are ChatGPT ads available in my country?

It depends. OpenAI’s availability list currently includes Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, the UK and the US, and self-service ad buying opened across 31 European markets on 31 August 2026. More countries are being added.
